The four museums, soon to become five with the re-opening on the Neues Museum, of Museum Island all offer free admission on Thursday evenings from 6pm to 10pm and over the next ten years are to be upgraded and connected by underground walkways. Berlin's state museums have had to come a long way since the Second World War, to re-establish themselves as world class centers of culture.
40 years in a country (East Germany) that had little money to maintain them, never mind produce something outstanding, certainly didn't help. A major landmark to their recovery was the allocation in April 2000 of 2 billion Deutschmarks of state and city funds to carry out a refurbishment and rebuilding plan. At the centre of this plan is the restructuring of Museum Island (Museuminsel), which was declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in March 2000.
The Altes Museum, the first public museum built in Berlin, should definately be the first stop on your journey, with its extensive collection of Greek and Egyptian antiquities. Nextdoor is the Pergamon Museum, adjacent also to the Bode Museum, and round the back of that is the Alte Nationalgalerie.
Why should I goBecause old things are cool, especially mummies – just don’t expect them to get up and walk around, no matter how hard you stare at them.
WhereThe Altes Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie, the Bode Museum, and the Pergamon Museum are all on Museum Island.
