There are a variety of places to see while on your holidays in Berlin. When touring the city, you will come across lots of things to see and lots of things to do. You can either tour the city while on your own or you can tour the city as a family or with friends. You will be able to get around the city either by walking on foot or you can choose to ride the subway. The subway is convenient as it is both above ground and below ground. The cars for the subway are short when compared to other subway cars from other cities such as NYC or Chicago. When riding the subway in Berlin, you will be surprised that they use the honor system, there are no gates up that you have to pass thru in order to get on the subway. You are expected to purchase a ticket and then get on the subway.

Brandenburg gate
When visiting Berlin, you will want to check out the Brandenburg Gate which is one of the major landmarks of Berlin. Many know about the history of the Germany and know that when napoleon first conquered Berlin and went into Paris he took the Quadriga. Later when the statue came back to Berlin, the wreath would then be replaced with a cross that would then be made the statue the Goddess of Victory. It would later on be when the Nazi’s gained their power that they would use the gate to symbolize the power that they held. The gate would later on be restored by not just the East Berlin Government but also by the West Berlin Government. When the Berlin wall was created, the gate was closed. Later Ronald Reagan would tell Mr. Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall while stand

ing in front of the Brandenburg Gate.

Reichstag
The next place that you will want to visit while on vacation in Berlin is the Reichstag. Here you can go inside and watch Parliament do their job during proceedings. The trouble is that you must reserve a seat and this will have to be done the day before. The building was restored in the 1990’s since it had some damage from the World War II era. When it was remodelled it was the British architect Norman Foster who remodelled the building. There is a glass dome that is inside of the session area that you will be able to see once inside.

Holocaust Memorial
The next place of interest that you will want to check out is the Holocaust Museum or Memorial. This is very close to the Brandenburg Gates and Reichstag area of the city. The site was a subject of controversy that would later on be unveiled in the year 2005. The location has 2700 stone slabs that do not display any names on them and was designed by Peter Eisenman in the year 1999. Underneath the stone slabs is a museum that people tour and visit each day and not just on holy days. On the stone slabs, there are a number of postcards or letters that are written by members of families who were separated due to the holocaust. Many of these letters are sad and will affect you in ways that you never imagined. Many of these letters would be written by children who were separated by the holocaust from their parents. You can tour the museum and the memorial for free and it will not take very long to tour the area. Inside of the museum you can visit the projector room which shows a slide of everyone’s name who died in the Holocaust and their age at death.
