Up until recently the pandas were the zoo's major attraction, drawing the most gawkers, that is until little polar bear Knut arrived on the scene. Since then there's been no looking back, Knut t-shirts, Knut coffee mugs, and probably somewhere, someone is selling Knut contraceptives. Bears have always had a special significance in Berlin, as the city mascot, so it's only natural that a little polar bear should be the upgraded, fresh for the 21st century, version.

Knut, knut, knut, everyone's going crazy for that little white thing

Cages are rare here, and the animals are mostly left to roam freely around recreations of their own natural habitat. First opened to the public in 1884, this zoo is one of the largest in the world, and reputedly has the widest variety of animals contained in one place in all the planet. Or at least something like that.

Legend has it that the first bomb to hit Berlin during WWII landed on the only elephant in this zoo, but that's probably just an oft repeated lie.

Why should I go
Because there's a cute little polar bear, and if you don't care about him then there's also a really large impressive aquarium.

Where
Hardenburger Platz 8, nearest station is Zoo Station
