Located in the funky, grungy district of Friedrichshain, Schlafmeile is a little off the beaten track but perfect if you want to explore a part of Berlin that is never really experienced by most tourists. The hostel is far enough away from the major landmarks to be suffocated with the mundane checkbox ticking types, looking to splash through the city in a couple of hours and only see what is expected of them.
Friedrichshain is real Berlin. It's where the punks live, where the dive bars are, where the graffiti crawls up the grey buildings like vines.
Opened in 2005, Schlafmeile is owned and run by a New Zealander who by his own confession got so hooked on the city that he wanted to move here and help facilitate the kind of Berlin enlightenment in others that he personally experienced. Right next door to the hostel is a Kiwi restaurant. Tasty stuff.
