Duck down into the cellar entrance of one of Berlin's best German restaurants, cosy and calm , a nice retreat from the busy tourist-filled street of Oranienburger Strasse in the summer outside. Only metres away is the grand Neu Synagogue, which had it not been for the British carpet bombing the area in 1943 would have survived the Second World War miraculously intact.
If you're not impressed by the food at Assel, which you certainly should be (there's a famous chef, but we won't tell you which one), then you certainly should be impressed by the TV screens in the toilets. Just in case the conversation at the table is sooooooo boring that you need to retreat away to watch the world news for 30mins.
Assel in German means woodlouse, but there's none of that around here. Menu in English.
