Built in 1969 as a a symbol of East German socialism, this 368m tower, the tallest structure in Germany, even has its own reolving cafe and restaurant. Warning, the food isn't exactly fantastic. Due to fire safety regulations they can't actually have a working kitchen at the top of the tower, which means they need to cook all the food at the bottom then whizz it up in a lift to the restaurant/cafe, where at the last minute it is whacked in a microwave oven then served on your plate. Oh well.
A trip to the top once offered a rare chance for East Germans to see what life on the other side of the BerlinWall was really like, if you intend to go up it now expect long queues, even in the winter season, and the price is pretty hefty. However the view after dark, as long as there are no low lying clouds, is fantastic, and you can see most of Berlin's historic landmarks illuminated from high above the city.
Why should I go
