Berlin has since the 1920s laid claim to a culture of Volkskuche, or 'Volxkuche' - so-called 'kitchens of the people'. The website Stressfaktor provides an up to date list of where these kitchens are, at what time, and on which days. Most are in former squats, now turned into legitimate 'project houses'.
VoKu's roots are firmly planted in left-wing politics, the solidarity idea of people being to eat for a reasonable price - irrelevant of their social status or purse size. The kind of grub ranges from breakfast/brunch buffet to full home cooked meals, vegan/vegetarian snacks and oven baked pizzas, served sometimes just for donations or small sums of cash (€1.50/€2).
Some of these kitchens also coincide their Voku nights with free band performances or film screenings.
Price examplesVaries depending on location and type of food, but usually not more than a few Euro.
